We spoke with Dr. David Dotlich about Adaptive Leadership and his work on the importance of bringing head, heart and gut to leadership in complex and changing business environments. David is an acknowledged expert in the field of leadership, has been named one of the Top 50 Coaches in the United States and consults to executive committees, CEOs, and senior leaders across the world in the areas of leadership, business strategy, and executive coaching. David is the co-author of nine best-selling books, including ‘Head, Heart, and Guts: How the World’s Best Companies Develop Complete Leaders’ and has a new book about to be released on dealing with paradox, uncertainty and complexity. He is also a certified psychologist in career development and life planning and was a professor at the University of Minnesota, teaching in the Business School and the Speech Communication Department.
We spoke with Professor Richard Boyatzis on his work on Resonant Leadership, Coaching with Compassion and the impacts of the Autonomic Nervous System and how his research connects with and supports our own work on multiple Brain Integration Coaching.
Professor Boyatzis is a leading expert in leadership development and emotional intelligence (EI), and has authored more than 150 articles and books on leadership and change, including: Primal Leadership with Daniel Goleman and Annie McKee, and Resonant Leadership, with Annie McKee. His research on human behavior has revolutionized management education and his articles on coaching have included numerous longitudinal studies as well as neuroscientific fMRI studies on coaching effectiveness.
We spoke with leadership researcher, expert and educator, Jim Kouzes about encouraging the heart of leadership and its links to the head, heart and gut embodied neural intelligences.
Jim, and his co-author Barry Posner’s book, Encouraging the Heart, has its origins in their research on the practices of individuals functioning at their personal best as leaders. They have consistently found that when getting extraordinary things done, leaders follow five practices. One of the five practices is encouraging the heart.
James R. Doty, M.D. is a Neurosurgeon and the founder and director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University. He works with scientists from a number of disciplines examining the moral, social and neural bases for compassion and altruism. He is also a professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine, as well as an inventor, entrepreneur, author and philanthropist. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller, Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon’s Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart. In this interview, James spoke about his work on Compassion and his book, ‘Into the Magic Shop’ and its links with the head, heart and gut brains.
Dr. Stephen Porges is a Distinguished University Scientist at Indiana University, where he directs the Trauma Stress Research Consortium within the Kinsey Institute. In addition, he is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina and Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois and the University of Maryland. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed scientific papers across several disciplines. And he is the originator of Polyvagal Theory, a theory that links the evolution of the mammalian autonomic nervous system to social behaviour, and is leading to innovative treatments in several behavioral, psychiatric, and physical disorders. In the field of mBIT Coaching, we use the insights of Polyvagal Theory for master coaching practices. In this interview we explored some deeper questions about the Autonomic Nervous System and Polyvagal Theory.
Bruce Cryer is Global Director of HeartMath HealthCare, and for eleven years served as CEO at HeartMath (USA), he is also co-founder of ‘What Makes Your Heart Sing’. HeartMath is an innovative research‐based company offering scientifically-validated and award‐winning technology to boost performance, productivity and health while reducing stress. Alyce Sorokie is a Digestive Consultant and Colonic Therapist who specializes in alternative healthcare of the gut. She is the author of the excellent book ‘Gut Wisdom‘ and is one of the foremost authorities on topics of gut digestion and the relationship of stress-to-gut health. She is the facilitator of Gut Wisdom workshops, classes and cleanses and has been featured in the Chicago Tribune and the New York Times. Alyce is passionate about teaching people how to learn to listen to their gut’s ‘voice’, empowering them to make choices that are more health minded. Dr. Ginny Whitelaw is a biophysicist by training, an author, a leadership expert, worked for 10 years at NASA and has 30 years of training in Zen and martial arts. We spoke with Mark Taylor about balancing the wisdom of the three brains. Mark is a researcher, somatic therapist and teacher of developmental movement awareness and embodied anatomy. He directs the Center for BodyMindMovement, and is a director of the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association.
